Manuel N. Batista, 77, of Taunton, MA passed away on May 3, 2022 after a brief and unexpected illness. Manuel (Manny) was born August 30, 1944 in Carapinha, Tabua, Portugal to Mario Nunes Batista and Maria Dos Anjos.
On May 9, 1971 he married Assunção A. (Carvalho) Batista, whom he is survived by and to whom he was married for 50 years. Immediately upon their marriage, she joined him in Angola where they resided until 1975 and where both their daughters were born. After a brief return to Portugal, he immigrated to the United States in 1978. Manny worked at WEHSCO in Stoughton, MA as a machine operator for nearly three decades until his retirement. He enjoyed playing soccer in his younger years and following his favorite team, fishing, woodworking and working on many home projects. He was always willing to lend his talents to help his family and friends. He also enjoyed sharing a meal with family where, on occasion, he would showcase his own skill in the kitchen making delicious meals. During those meals, he would share stories and many a joke.
He is survived by his children: Sandra C. Gomes and her husband Manuel of East Taunton, MA and Ana P. Chavarria and her husband Paul of Taunton, MA. He is survived by his sister Isabel B. Benido and her husband Salvador and was predeceased by his sister Irene B. Simões and her husband José, all of Portugal. He was a loving grandfather to Delaney DeGroff and her husband Reese, Nathanael Chavarria, Jayden Chavarria, Jamen Gomes, Jaxen Gomes and Lily Chavarria and great grandfather to Kayde DeGroff. Manny also leaves behind many nieces and nephews both here and in Portugal.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Manuel’s family on Saturday, May 14, 2022, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, with a funeral service beginning at 3:30pm, in the Sowiecki-Snyder Home for Funerals, 69 West Britannia Street, Taunton. Interment will be private.
